This class uses an interdisciplinary approach to teach architecture, focusing on history, language arts, visual and communication arts. Students examine their own immediate environment and explore relationships between their present-day world and their cultural roots. They will investigate types of buildings and styles of architecture, focusing especially on the development of homes that incorporate energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly methods of building. (*Technological Option: Students will use Google Sketch Up to design their own building.
ART OF THE COMIC BOOK
Whether your student is an accomplished artist or is just beginning to discover his or her visual talents, this class provides the perfect environment to tell stories that compress laughter and lessons into a few images. Comics allow young people to create their own universes where possibilities are limited only by the imagination. Students learn comic book story structure, layout, and character development. Instructors will focus on the techniques needed to create a sense of realistic movement as well as developing the sense of story.
EYE OF THE CAMERA - THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Art is observation, especially in the art of photography. Students will trace the rich history of the development of photography, both as an art and as a technology. They will look at examples of great photographs to nurture their understanding of what makes a photograph truly captivating. Students will learn basic lighting and composition, and work on developing a vocabulary for “reading” images, using both manual and digital cameras.
This class provides a foundation in figure structure, anatomical drawing, and proportion, as well as line and tone. Students begin with contour and gesture drawing as they learn about the interaction of form and content. Instruction includes work with pencil, charcoal, pen and ink.
This class covers the Who, What, When, Where, and Why of Photojournalism. Students discover where their interests lie and learn how to market their skills and images. Students design a portfolio of their life events, and learn the design skills that will make their portfolio stand out.
THE HARMONY OF ART SCIENCE
How do science (producing knowledge and technology) and art (producing revelations and sensations) harmonize with each other? What bridges these two worlds, allowing us to see the art in the development of science and the science in the making of art? Beginning with brief lectures, classes proceed to activities designed to correlate the fields of art and science throughout history. Each class will focus on a particular period within human history and introduce prominent figures in both the artistic and scientific fields.
THE MAGIC & HISTORY OF CHALK ART
Students will discover the ancient history of murals and street painting, while actively learning the various principles of graphing, drawing and painting. Together with a professional street painter, they will each design and create their own street painting with pastel chalks!
