Every young student has a mad scientist lurking inside their imagination. Let STAR Science show them how everyday objects can be turned into useful and fun contraptions. Students can launch a rocket, make a telegraph, create an electric game or even build their very own robot! Students create wacky gadgets while learning the dynamics of forces, energy and momentum.
Join our team of scientists for a remarkable voyage into the captivating world around us. Discover a 3-dimensional world and make 3-D glasses. Create a huge spurting geyser and make rubber bands magically move! Blast off a far-flying finger rocket, make water disappear before your eyes, and dive into other mind-bending experiments!
ROCKETS, ROBOTS & ROVERS
Discover the ingenuity behind NASA’s newest rockets, robots and rovers. Students can explore their inner engineering power to defy gravity by constructing and launching a rocket that will blast-off up to 1000 feet! Or, they can design and create their own personal robot and air-powered rover, then compete to see which machines prevail.
In a study of the Earth’s surface, shape and features, students will map out the country of their choice. By deciphering topographic maps and using Google Earth and Sky they will define various parts of the earth’s surface. From map projects to the history of cartography this class will examine how different countries’ topography influences and directs the development of their culture.
AN INTRODUCTION TO ANATOMY
Join in a structural survey of the human body, including the skeletomuscular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and genitourinary systems. Looking at the independent functions of all of the systems of the body, find out how they work together to keep us healthy and strong. Students will dissect a sheep eye, sheep brain, sheep heart, owl pellet and squid.
BONES & STONES
Have you ever dreamed of discovering an ancient treasure or your very own dinosaur bone? Grab your shovel and let Bones and Stones show you how! Learn to excavate! Decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics! Reconstruct an artifact! Make a Cro-Magnon cave painting! Learn basic anthropological and archaeological field methods while studying a variety of ancient world cultures.
Think all bugs are creepy? Let STAR’s premiere entomologist show you that many are actually beneficial to human life, as you study insect life- cycles, developmental stages, social behavior and anatomy using live and preserved specimens.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SCIENTIST
Having trouble deciding what kind of scientist to be when you grow up? Step into an engineer’s shoes while designing and building your own roller coaster! Learn about the life of a paleontologist while casting fossils and examining dinosaur bones. Hatch and observe sea monkeys just like a marine biologist. Take a magic carpet ride through the fascinating world of science!
BEST OF STAR SCIENCE
This class is a dynamic sampling of STAR Science classes, including earth, life and physical science. Design a volcano! Make yummy ice cream the old-fashioned way! Build a mousetrap car! Create optical illusions! You’ll even get to dissect a sheep’s eye (alternative lesson option available). It’s the perfect class for students who love science so much they cannot limit themselves to just one topic.
A terrible crime has been committed and the STAR Science Department needs your help to solve the mystery! Study the crime scene carefully in order to figure out who the culprit is! Collect forensic evidence, perform chemical acid-base reactions, and spool DNA. Become part of our Crime Investigation Unit!
