2-D GAME DESIGN
Do you spend your hours gaming on the computer? Is your brain bursting with ideas for your own virtual world, populated with fantastic creatures and heroic challenges for them to face? Learn the basics of programming while creating and sharing 2-D interactive games, music and animated art. As students create and share their project, they develop a greater understanding of mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.
ALICE - A DESIGN WONDERLAND
Tumble down the rabbit hole and discover a world as boundless as your imagination. In this computer design class, students will create original 3-D animations, story outlines and original game designs to bring their imaginings to life. Using 3-D graphics and a drag-and-drop interface, Alice facilitates an engaging first programming experience in which students are able to create interactive game platforms for game play and to share on the web.
In this hands-on class, students work on Sibelius’ new software, Groovy City Music. A professional musician will guide students through the process of creating their very own musical scores from conception to design. Students will explore sounds and rhythms from Jazz to Hip Hop, while simultaneously learning the fundamentals of musical notation, scoring and professional recording.
Lights, Camera, Puppets! Puppetry gets a modern twist for the digital age. Using a camera, video monitor and green-screen technology explore on- camera storytelling with puppets. Work with traditional puppets to fit into an exciting, magical story you help bring to digital life. Share your final puppet-tastic video project with other students, friends and family!
Yes, Google helps us to search the internet, but did you know you could use Google for many other reasons? Learn how to create blogs with Blogger, edit and share photos with Picasa, build 3-D models with Sketch Up, create a notebook for your internet research, and travel the world with Google Earth. Stay on the forefront of new technology in this exciting class.
MAKE YOUR OWN CD
This course will teach your student some of the skills needed to be the next Big Time Record Producer. Students will focus on both musical development and technological understanding of recording equipment. Students will then combine their musical knowledge with their writing skills to create a song or spoken word poem to record on a CD.
NAVIGATING YOUR PASSION
Study your individual passion in this inter-personal, student-centered activity class. Taking a subject that most fascinates, students perform in- depth research to broaden their understanding of the material. Focusing on their topic, they will develop fine points of their project, and take that project through a website presentation report to actual project creation (photographs, video, 3-D structure, interviews, etc.) This class allows GATE students to explore projects with individual depth and complexity, creating an intra-personal forum for students to share with others.
Given how ubiquitous computers are these days, every artist has to have a mastery of digital graphics. But many artists have gone a step beyond and found meaningful ways to incorporate digital techniques into their pieces to create fantastical realms. Students will explore the wide variety of painting tools and create their own digital masterpiece by utilizing Adobe Photoshop.
As a stand alone class, or as a continuation class to Public Speaking, students create an oral presentation, and generate an effective speech using Power Point. This class emphasizes articulation, projection and stage presence, while effectively using power point to enhance their presentation.
REALITY CHECK (MEDIA LITERACY)
For students who wonder “Why don’t I look like those people in the magazines?” this photo-computer class will give them a behind-the-scenes view of the creation of image and advertising in the global media market. Digital effects such as air-brushing will be identified, and students will work with their own image and the images of others to demystify the “perfect” images shown in magazines, films, and other forms of media. This class focuses both on digital photography, and more importantly, a sociological examination of self and others.
STOP MOTION ANIMATION
In the world of animation your imagination becomes reality! Learn how to animate drawings using stop motion. Create storyboards, experiment with different camera angles and movements, and write and edit scripts.
